Artist Spotlight – Don Hertzfeldt

The JESS3 team loves artists. Their pioneering spirit, the narratives that are contained within their work, and the sheer beauty of what they do. This week, we’re paying special attention to animator Don Hertzfeldt.

You may know Don Hertzfeldt from his 2000 film, the Oscar nominee (really) and internet legend, Rejected.

Or perhaps, more recently, from his writing, animating and directing of the opening gag of the The Simpsons’ 26th season premier.

The writer/animator/director/independent filmmaker is known for his expressive animation, deep theming, and bizarre humor. He is also one of the most talented and creative minds in his field.

Take a look at some of his other films, such as The Meaning of Life.

Or, part 1 of his tour de force, Everything Will Be Okay. The full length version of this film, It’s Such a Beautiful Day, is available on Netflix.

We chose to feature Don Hertzfeldt this week because it marks the release of his brand new film, World of Tomorrow, winner of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize for Short Film. Hertzfeldt is the only person ever to win this award more than once.
