Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) deals with the combination of real-world and computer-generated data (virtual reality), where computer graphics objects are blended into real footage in real time.

Here at JESS3 we are looking at ways to incorporate Augmented Reality techniques into our campaigns. I am also working on integrating this technology into my art shows.

Some background on Augmented Reality,

The GE smart grid campaign is a well known major campaign. You have a magazine ad that when placed in front of a website with webcam enabled, the ad opens up and the user can pivot the 3d design that appears on the screen. They describe it as a Digital Hologram.

here are some other examples

Lego is debuting this innovation in stores soon. It uses their augmented reality techniques to let kids see and manipulate an extremely detailed 3D version of the assembled model, by moving the box around in front of the display.

I think we will see this kind of implementation in malls soon. in this case hello kitty has these cards you hold, and it places the mask directly above the thing you are holding.

Imagine you walk up to a store advertisement and your body has clothes on it, etc. Can you imagine the possibilities of this with psychedelic horror content? imagine texas chain saw massacre meets fear and loathing in las vegas meets disney land.

this guy is walking around an art gallery wearing glasses that are hooked to a backpack computer, so he can load the augmented data. this is like looking at one of those old zack morris cell phones.

this is an interesting example of how this kind of technology might be used in something like cirque de soleil
