Guitar Hero – And Why I Can’t Believe I Missed the Boat on This One!

Today I visited my boy Erik at the Google HQ in NYC … and we played around with this game “Guitar Hero 2” for PS2 … and I fell in love.

This game pushes the limits with music and gaming in ways that are similar to “dance revolution” but genius in its own right.

You use this plastic “guitar” type thing and basically tap and strum based on colored keys flying at you … you can pick the song you play from a selection of covers of famous songs, like “Heart Shaped Box”. Then you pick between guitar or bass and then between battle or cooperative mode.

I was talking to a google employee that seemed to be quite the expert and he said that the company that makes it is coming out with a band version where you can play the drums and what not.

Imagine if you hook this kind of game up with the technology of Apple’s GarageBand … you can only select from cover songs because the rights were too expensive but why not have a whole game devoted to this air guitar controller and do like a “Tool – The Concert Game” or like a rock legends thing, where you are playing with amazing musicians … and the whole idea is that you get an amazing musical experience. The thing that gets me is the line between game and life merge in a way that most games wouldn’t dream of. And I also love that they said screw it and made their own controller for it. Imagine if Doom had sold a gun, or Second Life came with a controller??
