I have always liked Rye Rye’s youthful look and sound. She is M.I.A.’s protege, which is reason enough for me to be obsessed. Rye Rye and M.I.A. both got pregnant around the same time, and they waited until after their babies came to recharge their careers. Rye Rye hails from the fine city of Baltimore (right up the street from us in DC), which although it’s an African American city doesn’t have any modern musicians to speak of.

At what must be the peak in her career, Rye Rye was just in the 21 Jump Street movie as a co-star! She had two lines in the whole movie, one of which was about “fingers in butts”, but that’s okay. One of the hallmarks of Rye Rye’s (and M.I.A.’s for that matter) style is dancing, high-intensity beats, wacky clothes and AMAZING VIDEO PRODUCTION.

Somehow these ladies figured out that in hip hop, most music videos are a thug on the streets of a ghetto, and people love that. One problem if you are a female is that your only option is to play the cheerleader in a love song, or show skin in a erotic song. M.I.A. and Rye Rye have figured out a great formula for music marketing.

She also partnered with Esthero and did the 21 Jump Street movie theme song.

Here is one of her new singles. The song sounds a bit confused, kind of like M.I.A. meets Nicki Minaj.
