Coming Soon: Cloud Atlas

Overly ambitious, or this fall’s mega-blockbuster? We won’t find out until October 26, but if this 6-minute trailer is any indication, Cloud Atlas will be magnificent.

With their film adaptation of David Mitchell’s best-selling novel, brother-sister directing duo Lana and Andy Wachowski took on a monumental task: weaving Cloud Atlas’s six distinct story lines into one film. The pair dreamed of making an arthouse-style masterpiece that touched multiple genres – from romance, to science fiction, to drama, to political commentary. With the added directional help of Run Lola Run’s Tom Tykwer, they seem to have accomplished just that, with a three-hour runtime and reported $100 million budget. As The Guardian reports, this could be 2012’s answer to Inception.

I can’t remember the last time a film held such star power. If Tom Hanks, Halle Barry, Jim Sturgess, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw don’t strike your fancy, scope out the rest of the cast list.

Cloud Atlas makes its world debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The film has been kept largely under wraps, so for the next month, feast your eyes on these stunning stills.
