Wayne Dorrington Strikes Back

What do you get when you blend expertly designed icons, a Brit who blogs under the headline “I should really get out more,” and the dopest sci-fi plot of all time? (Sorry Trekkies.) You get the third edition of Wayne Dorrington’s take on Star Wars.

When Dorrington finished The Empire Strikes Back last year, I loved it and couldn’t resist hitting him up for an interview here. A very long time has passed since then, and he’s finally done with Return of the Jedi, which is every bit as incredible as his prior efforts.

You can almost hear the Imperial March with Dorrington’s opening frames, as Darth Vadar’s ship is greeted at a decimated Death Star by rows of Storm Troopers.

The story marches on, of course, through the rebels’ escape from the grip of Jabba the Hut, and into their trip to the realm of the Ewoks, where C-3PO leverages his kingly status to gain liberation for his comrades.

It’s on Endor, home of the Ewoks, that Luke learns about his long-lost twin sister: the very same Princess Leia who he’d kissed in Episode V. (Awkwaaarrrrd!)

As Star Wars fans know, this is all just the lead-up to a two-front battle for the universe. With the Ewoks as their allies, the rebels attack imperial outposts on Endor with some success.

Meanwhile, rebel ships confront the imperial fleet for what they hope is a surprise attack.

With a view of the battle roaring outside, Luke and Darth Vadar try their hands at one last epic light saber battle while the Emperor enjoys the show.

SPOILER ALERT: (Is that even possible with Star Wars?) The rebels win the battle on Endor and in outer space before rocking out to some pretty awesome Ewok tunes in a massive party with their furry, little friends.

The 155-frame pictograph of Return of the Jedi is Dorrington’s most ambitious yet. With Episodes IV through VI now complete, though, will Dorrington take on the ridiculousness that was Jar Jar Binks and the prequels? Reading between the lines on his blog, where he published these graphics, the answer appears to be “No.” #dropsthemic
