CES 2011: a Tablet’s Experience

After spending the last few weeks demoing the Samsung Galaxy Tab (which I have come to really enjoy due to its large pocket-sized form factor), I’ve been excited to come to CES to preview some of the new innovations in the tablet area.

After all, reports indicate that there will be close to 80 tablets on display this year.

So far, the most innovative I’ve seen is the Samsung Sliding PC 7, which has a hidden keyboard that drops down and folds forward for a more enriching experience. Able to run for 8.5 hours on Windows 7, it’s scheduled to release for purchase in March. Very exciting.

On the other side if the impressive isle sits the Coby Kyros, a tablet similar in size to the Galaxy Tab which also runs Android. Specifically, the buttons are unfamiliar in appearance, responsiveness requires more pressure than one would expect (as it is a resistive screen), and the center circle home button was recessed to a point where I would expect to have an uncomfortable and reddened finger after extended use. Put bluntly, unless the price point is drastically low, I’m not too impressed.

Off to find something new…
