CitizenGulf DC

After our BP Oil Plugin took off earlier this summer, Citizen Effect and Citizen Gulf contacted us about their nationwide day of events to raise awareness on the lasting impact of the oil spill and raise funds to help the fishing families that have lost so much over the last few months.

We were already looking for ways to take digital activism to real life impact beyond our donation buttons, so we were excited to get the call.

And now, the rundown…

Who: JESS3, Social Media Club of DC (SMCDC) and CitizenGulf (DC Chapter).

What: Introduced initially by Larissa Fair of SMCDC, CitizenGulf-DC worked with JESS3 to design and produce a 5 x 9-foot banner depicting a vision of the what we all hope the Gulf will again someday be.

Why: Raise awareness and funds; envision the future we can all directly help create.

When: Last Wednesday night (8/25).

Where: At the 5th and K Busboys and Poets (one of our first clients!)

DC RESULTS: The DC CitizenGulf event was the most successful fundraiser held by the group, raising a little more than $1,600 which, through the education fund created by Catholic Charities of New Orleans will provide assistance to impacted fishing families with school supplies and uniforms, as well as after school programming that includes tutoring and homework assistance, enrichment classes, recreational activities, and healthy snacks.

ANALYSIS: Full post-mortem / recap on the aggregate, nationwide efforts by community leader Geoff Livingston (“Post Mortem: Examining CitizenGulf“). Great look at goals, metrics, outcomes.
