Pownce

My public POWNCE account is http://pownce.com/jess3/

Pownce takes a few web product concepts and mashes them into one. It takes the facebook feed, and yousendits notification functionality to the next level with a dash of user experience inspiration from flickr. It’s also got some inspiration from Slideshare.

Pownce goes a little something like this, I can upload a mp3 and share it with all or some of my network. People can comment on the file or upload a file in retort. This becomes really useful if you are in a design team and want to share stuff with people outside of your group or if you are a freelancer – you could use it to share your work with clients and colleagues. Or a student – you could use this to upload notes and research files and get feedback from your class and teacher? Etc.

It’s got a really nice interface, and a lot of sweet touches … this is from Kevin Rose (of Digg fame, and if you are a 20-something nerd like me, you might remember Kevin from TechTV!!!) The founding team of the company also includes Leah Culver, Daniel Burka, and Shawn Allen.

the spaced out rose..

Pownce uses adobe AIR technology, which is the public version of what was known as Adobe APOLLO.. very sweet stuff if you havent checked out what it is.. imagine the power of software (no crashes), but with the rapid development of web design (and sexyness of ajax/flash)… the app you download is very sweet and I want to see lots more apps like this. yousendit should make one of these…and the flickr uploadr should use Adobe AIR. I have been using my pownce account to share pdfs and mp3s, and when I upload an mp3, I can play it right there on the page with one of those sexy little flash mp3 players. (like del.icio has been offering forever now)

GMail also lets you play MP3 files right inside the GMail interface without having to download the MP3 or open an external media player.

When you receive an audio file as an email attachment, click the play button and Google will play the audio file for you in a popup window. Very neat implementation (see screenshot)

Now digging into the GMail Mp3 player code, I discovered that it’s actually the Google video player that’s playing the audio file. Infact, you can play any MP3 files from the embedded Google Video player without even having to login to GMail. Here’s the secret URL (works perfect in Firefox)

http://mail.google.com/mail/html/audio.swf?audioUrl=MP3_URL

Replace the MP3_URL with the actual location of the MP3 file on the web and play it inside Google Video. Odeo, take note. Google is entering your territory.

I got an invite for pownce from my main man Peter Corbett who writes a terrific blog at http://advercation.com/. but I have a couple left if anyone wants one?

kevin is offering a paid version also.. so for 20$ a year you get no ads and larger file size.. well see how this pans out. google can you just start offering free file storage so the yousendits of the world can die, please?
