The Internet Trends of 2015

Every year, Kleiner Perkins Caulfield releases a detailed report on the year’s top internet trends. This year’s comes in just shy of 200 pages. Check it out below – or, if you’re pressed for time, read on for our highlights!

This year’s biggest internet-related company is… drumroll please… Apple. Try not to look too surprised.

Users are accessing content in more and more new ways, from gaming consoles to social media.

Internet user and smartphone subscription growth rates are strong, but slowing – likely meaning that the market is edging closer to saturation.

Internet usage, on the other hand, is still climbing steadily. This is where internet companies will be looking when it comes to growth in years to come.

If you’ve ever used email for business (so, if you’re reading this), you probably know that business communications are moving away from email – finally.

Businesses are also increasingly able to connect their users directly with vendors for support, welcome news for anyone who’s waited endlessly for IT to come and help out with… just about anything, really.

Unsurprisingly, messaging apps are at the top of the heap for both overall usage and number of individual uses. Because what is life without gossip?

At the top of the heap: WhatsApp and Snapchat, with usage rates in the billions.

But messages themselves are changing. Especially among the youngest users, visual content has the edge over the written variety.

And as they join the working world in droves, they’re going to keep changing the face of the internet!
