Bizarrechitecture

Bizarrechitecture: because sometimes your basic four walls and a roof just isn’t enough. Today, we salute six of the strangest buildings ever built.

Krzywy Domek (Sopot, Poland)

Named the “Crooked Little House” by its architects, who wanted to have a little fairytale fun, this building actually houses a shopping center.

Casa do Penedo (Fafe, Portugal)

The Stone House, inspired by the Flintstones (true story), was an internet legend until it was verified by a series of tourists. Apparently, people thought it looked too good to be true!

Kansas City Library (Missouri, USA)

This giant’s bookshelf is actually a clever disguise for the library’s parking structure. All of the books on display were suggested by library patrons.

Museum Moderner Kunst (Vienna, Austria)

The building that houses Vienna’s Museum Moderner Kunst (in English: Modern Art Museum) cheekily announces its dedication to the new and experimental by wearing a more traditional structure as a hat.

Kubus Woningen (Rotterdam, Netherlands)

Rotterdam’s Cubic Houses are a response to the challenge of building over a pedestrian bridge. Architect Piet Blom envisioned an abstract “forest” of houses overhead.

Wonderworks (Pigeon Ford, Tennessee)

Like the Modern Art Museum, this “overturned” building makes sense once you know what’s inside. Wonderworks is an attraction with exhibits devoted to strange scientific phenomena, like tornadoes.

Honorable Mention:

Rotating Tower (Dynamic Tower) (Dubai, UAE)

While it’s still in the planning stages, once finished, this building will definitely land high on the list!
