Snacking at SXSW

Every year, JESS3 participates in SXSW. It’s a can’t-miss event for so many reasons, one of which is the city of Austin itself: the people, the weather, and of course, the food.

And then we spotted this BBQ segment on Nightline and guess who we saw.

That’s right!

And, with that in mind, we thought we should put in our two cents about Austin’s amazing food scene and share the wealth with you. Read on for the official JESS3 picks for Austin’s best bites.

Uchi + Uchiko // Billing themselves as contemporary Japanese and Japanese farmhouse cuisine, respectively, both restaurants offer the most incredible sushi you’ll have in your life. Uchi is the more upscale of the two.

Qui // Top Chef winner Paul Qui, formerly of Uchi and Uchiko, now runs the hottest restaurant in Austin. His menu is all about eclectic seasonal fare and innovative cocktails.

East Side King // If you don’t have the time or budget for Uchi or Qui, check out this mini food truck chain. Started by Paul Qui and fellow Uchi vet Moto Utsonomiya, East Side King is where they let loose and experiment with Asian-style street food.

Rudy’s // This place seems like just another gas station – until you taste their amazing burnt ends and chopped beef. Tell them it’s your first time and they’ll load you down with samples of every meat on the menu.

Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ // This “food trailer” serves an amazing smoked brisket barbacoa taco on flour tortillas, topped with fresh guac and salsa. They also do brisket and pulled pork by the pound, for those with a more Swansonian palate.

Salt Lick // Not downtown, but trust us: just get in your car. It’s not a bad drive (25 minutes) and once you get there, it’s an all you can eat BBQ meatstravaganza. Our favorite thing on the menu is actually their beef ribs – not part of their all you can eat offer, but worth shelling out extra for.

Torchy’s Tacos // A great local Tex-Mex chain. Their tacos have awesome names like “Trailer Park”, and they serve all the basics plus some truly crazy fillings like batter-fried avocado, jalapeño sausage, and even scrambled eggs!

Gordough’s Donuts // Never forget dessert! Gordough’s started as a food truck and now has a sit down restaurant. They do have (seriously amazing) savory options, but trust us: your first job here is to avail yourself of the sweet cooked-to-order donut options. So incredible.
