Color Theory and the War on Smoking

Here at JESS3, we like sharing stories about cool, innovative, and above all beautiful design. Which might make you wonder why we’re posting an image – a big one – of this horrible color.

This is Pantone 448 C, and it’s the worst. But for what it’s been chosen to do, it’s perfect. Pantone 448 C is the new cigarette packaging color in the UK and Australia.

Faced with mandatory warning labels and the growing public understanding of the dangers of its products, tobacco companies have been using product design to sidestep the issue. Sleek, streamlined packaging suggests health and lightness. Labels in soothing shades of blue, green, and gold suggest nature and the outdoors. But not anymore. The only thing Pantone 448 C suggests is that you avoid it… which is exactly what the UK government wants.

You can read the law here, and a research paper regarding color theory in relation to packaging here.
