Image Fest Friday – 2/6/15

Visual design is amazing, right? It’s why Jess3 focuses so much data visualization – because turning complex ideas into art is powerful. That’s why, every Friday, we’ll be celebrating awesome design from artists that inspire us, in the hopes that they’ll inspire you too.

This sign that appears to say only “RISK” contains an incredible surprise. Risk going through the alley where it’s posted, and a motion-detecting UV light activates, revealing a secret “vs. Reward” message.

Hilariously, this sign was stolen within 8 hours. Risk can sometimes be its own reward.

No, it’s not mo-cap gone horribly wrong. It’s one of Yoshitoshi Kanemaki’s unique, insane, and insanely awesome wooden sculptures. Specializing in a fusion of the abstract and the surreal, the sculptor takes us through his artistic process and shows how he turns a log of wood into amazing(ly disturbing) art.

No, they’re not more wood carvings – they’re candles. Inspired by Freud, Dadaism, and horror movies, UK artist Anna Sternik uses soy-based wax to create pure nightmare fuel. They’re available in a variety of scents, so you can enjoy the rich aroma of dark chocolate as you watch someone’s face melt.

You might think your dad was pretty cool, but does your dad have tattoos of your childhood drawings all over his arms? And did he let you, at age 11, tattoo him yourself?

Didn’t think so, but Keith Anderson does.
