Day and Night Over DC

Starting with a sunrise over the Capitol building, Andrew Geraci‘s time-lapse video traces a day before some of the most iconic sites in the District of Columbia, international headquarters of JESS3. Geraci provides viewers a tour of DC, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, Union Station, Pennsylvania Avenue, and The Awakening as crowds and clouds rush by.

What makes Geraci’s video so unique is that, according to him, it had never been done before — a high-definition time-lapse video of DC, that is. DC can be a particularly challenging place to shoot 15,000 frames of video, as Geraci did, due to the District being a very heavily policed region with understandably suspicious law enforcement personnel. National Park Service agents, which effectively patrol everything covered in grass or trees in the area, stopped Geraci nine time during his shoots.

“It was a hassle to pack my bags up and move every time they stopped me, but if you’re persistent and stay out of the way, they’ll generally leave you alone,” Geraci told us via email. “DC police were actually pretty good too. I didn’t really see them much or have much interaction with them, which is always a plus.”

Reflecting on how he chose his shots, Geraci underscored the importance of a scene’s movement and evolution over time. “It can’t always be clouds” providing that movement, though, so he selected some of DC’s most highly trafficked spots for many of his shoots.

For what he calls his “next evolution in my time-lapse madness,” Geraci plans for another DC piece — this one more in-depth including “more monuments, more Capitol, more motion sliders with multiple axises.”
